Can you scuba dive without knowing how to swim?

Updated 2026-07-01 · Certification

You don't need to be an athletic swimmer to scuba dive, but you do need basic comfort in the water and minimal swimming ability. To become certified, most agencies ask you to complete a simple, untimed swim test and a float/tread test — proof that you won't panic if you end up without gear at the surface.

If you can't swim at all, you can still try diving through a guided intro experience, but a full certification requires meeting that basic water-comfort standard.

What the swim test actually involves

It's far gentler than people fear. Typically you swim a set distance (around 200 metres, or 300 with mask, snorkel and fins) with no time limit and any stroke you like, plus float or tread water for about 10 minutes. There's no speed requirement — it's about staying calm and comfortable, not performance.

If you're not a confident swimmer

Being relaxed in the water matters more than technique. If you're nervous, a few swim lessons or pool time beforehand makes a big difference. And a Discover Scuba-style guided dive (done under direct instructor supervision) lets true non-swimmers experience breathing underwater without a certification — a good way to test the waters first.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to know how to swim to scuba dive?+

For a certification, yes — but only at a basic level. You'll do an untimed swim (any stroke) of about 200 m and float/tread water for around 10 minutes. You don't need to be fast or skilled, just comfortable and calm in the water.

Can non-swimmers try scuba diving?+

Yes, through a guided 'try dive' (like Discover Scuba) under direct instructor supervision, which doesn't require the swim test. A full certification, however, does require meeting the basic swim and float standard.

How far do you have to swim for scuba certification?+

Usually about 200 metres swimming (or 300 metres with mask, snorkel and fins), with no time limit and any stroke, plus floating or treading water for roughly 10 minutes.
